COLLEGE BURSARY 2012/13

If you’re aged between 16 and 18 at the start of your course, you won’t have to pay any course fees and your parents/carers will be able to continue to claim any benefits they received while you were at school.

VULNERABLE BURSARY

Learners aged 16-18 and in receipt of Income Support, Local Authority care or care leavers arrangements or in receipt of Disability Living Allowance and Support and Employment allowance are entitled to apply for a bursary of £1200 to be paid weekly subject to attendance and performance expectations.

ARMY BURSARY SCHEME

The Army offers the Further Education Bursary programme to people who want to get qualified before they join the regular army.  Its aim is to support you while you’re at school or college and guarantee you a training place when you finish.

The bursary is worth £1000 for each year you study (up to 4 years), and a £1,000 bonus when you complete Phase 1 training. It’s available for Level 2 or 3 vocational courses and A levels. To apply, you have to be aged between 16 and 32 years old.

During your course, your own Army Careers Adviser will give you support and advice. They can help you organise work experience or an Insight Course to see first hand what Army life is like. WORRIED ABOUT THE COST?

Consider these things:

• University will be an experience that you can benefit from in many ways
• You will gain knowledge and skills that will be invaluable in later life
• You will discover a lot about yourselves as you form new friendships and enjoy a new range of social activities
• Graduates are less likely to be unemployed than non-graduates and will have a wider range of jobs to choose from with higher level qualifications
• It is estimated that the earning potential of a graduate over their working life can be £100,000 more than a non-graduate. The fees will vary with a maximum of £9000 being charged by some universities. These do not have to be paid upfront and can be taken as a loan
• The loans are paid back once the student has left university and is earning over £21,000
• The repayments are taken at 9% of their wages over £21,000, ‘that’s less than £7 per week on a salary of £25,000’.
• Any outstanding amount will be written off after 30 years. This is an investment in your child’s future and will help them to get ahead in a competitive world.
