Careers Guidance

As a student of North Notts College you will have access to a team of professional advisers who specialise in impartial advice and guidance in a range of areas:

• College and university options and application support
• One-to-one guidance on career development
• Job searching support
• CV and letter writing
• Interview preparation
• Mock interviews
• Job vacancies for students
• Career Development.

Also available is a virtual careers library and Gen Ed computer based software packages, which can assess your suitability to different careers.

Students can book interviews between 8.30am and 5pm for general information about progression from one course to another, or pathways to more popular careers. Evening appointments are also available, ring 01909 504500 or email: contact@nnc.ac.uk if you wish to book an appointment to speak to the advice and guidance team.

Functional Skills

As part of your full time course, you will complete Functional Skills programmes which will help you improve your English, ICT and Maths skills.

Functional Skills, which have replaced key skills, have been designed in partnership with employers who have highlighted the skills that young people need in the work place.

Additional Learning Support

We want every student to achieve their full potential, so we offer additional support wherever required to help with your personal or learning needs.

If needed you can benefit from:

• Extra support in classes
• One-to-one support with your assignments
• A range of assistive technology resources

We also offer:

• Specialist support and personal care (including help at meal times) for students with disabilities
• Sensory support for students with hearing or sight impairment
• Other resources including embossed resources and a talking book service
• Support for students with dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia etc.
• Support for students living with medical conditions, emotional and behavioural difficulties, Autistic   Spectrum Disorder or Asperger’s Syndrome
• Mobility support
• Special arrangements for exams and assessments.

Problems Communicating

If English isn’t your main language and you struggle with getting yourself understood, we have the course that will help you to improve your English. The course is called ESOL ( English for Speakers of other Languages) and covers:

• Speaking and listening
• Reading and writing
• Vocabulary
• Punctuation and grammar

Mentoring

Mentoring staff are here to assist any learner who may be experiencing issues either at College or in their personal lives. They are able to provide support, advice and guidance in a confidential environment to help learners make the most of their time at college. If you would like to talk with a mentor please call into Student Services or the Getaway, alternatively you can ring on 01909 504607 or email Bill at wingleton@nnc.ac.uk.

The Chaplaincy

Pastoral care and faith, values and belief

The college has chaplaincy provision and a part time chaplain, Kate Bottley. Kate is usually in college Monday to Wednesday 9am – 3pm. She works from her base in the Getaway as part of the mentoring team. The chaplain is available for those of any faith or none.  She is another one of those people around college who you can talk to.  If you a have a specific need or requirement relating to your faith or need access to resources, space or material, Kate would only be too happy to help.  The chaplaincy also organise events throughout the college year. Kate can help put you in touch with faith leaders in your own community culture or tradition and she is also available for one to one support. Email kbottley@nnc.ac.uk.
