Apprenticeships

If you are between the ages of 16 & 24 and looking for a job with training, Apprenticeships may be the best option for you. Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships offer you the opportunity to ‘Earn while you Learn’.

To become an apprentice you will need to secure yourself a job with a company in the same line of work that you want to train in, ie If you are working for a plasterer you would take a plastering apprenticeship and likewise if you worked as a junior accountant/book keeper you would take an accountancy apprenticeship.

You will need to be employed for a minimum of 16 hours a week and your employer should pay you, at least, the minimum apprenticeship wage of £95(pro rata) and must allow you to come college for your course one day a week. You’ll learn skills whilst at work with your employer and whilst at college.

What is the difference between studying on a full-time course and an apprenticeship course?

Generally when attending a full-time vocational course, you work towards a technical certificate. This is a qualification in its own right, where you learn the theory and the practical side of a trade whilst at college, usually over 2 days a week.

Apprenticeships are made up of a framework of qualifications. When taking an apprenticeship course, you will work towards a technical certificate (as in the full-time course), but also work towards an NVQ. An NVQ requires you to build a portfolio of evidence gathered whilst at work, to show that you can carry out what you have learnt at college in working environment. An NVQ is an advantage to employers when they are advertising vacancies as it shows you have had some work experience.

Functional skills is another qualification you will gain through an apprenticeship, generally numeracy and literacy but sometimes other skills such as working with others, team building etc. These are valuable skills that will be used within your trade and is an essential part of the apprenticeship.

The timescale of an apprenticeship varies, dependant on the level you take and the course content. They range between 18 months – 2 years for a Level 2, and similar for a Level 3. Generally you begin on a Level 2 Modern Apprenticeship and work towards your Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3). You can go even further in some instances onto Level 4 and Foundation Degrees!
