Posted May 27th, 2011 by dthornton with Comments Off

Retford Academy, part of North Notts College,  held its annual fashion show at the Retford Town Hall recently. The event was organised by the Hair and Beauty students themselves, supported by Karen Cannole, Cherie Ward and Carolyn Deacock, course leader and tutors, with profits made going towards the Bluebell Wood Hospice charity.

The theme of the event was Fantasy and Stories with costumes supplied by the local fancy dress shop “Fancy That”.

The students organised  a raffle, refreshments and tickets for the performance.

The show was a great success, much enjoyed by students, their families and friends. The total amount raised for the Bluebell Wood Hospice appeal was approximately £700, an amazing result.

After the show the students were presented with achievement awards for their hard work and commitrment throughout their year of study.

North Notts College students visit Auschwitz

Two North Notts College students, Louise Colton and Christina Maton, were chosen to take  part in the ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ project, organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust (HET) on the 31st March.

They first attended a seminar where they had an opportunity to meet other students taking part in the visit and were introduced to the hosts for the day. At the seminar Louise and Christina listened to a talk given by Kitty Hart Moxon, an Auschwitz survivor, who was the subject of a Yorkshire Television Documentary – Return to Auschwitz – in 1978, and were humbled by her story.

Students then met up at East Midlands airport on Thursday 31st March for a 5am rendezvous in readiness for the 7am flight to Krakow. Once they arrived at Krakow they were driven out to Oswiecim (polish word for Auschwitz) where they visited a Synagogue.

After visiting the Synagogue they went to see Birkenau I, the crematoria and to the purpose built death camp – Birkenau II.  Ironically the place name for this is quite beautiful – Silver Birch.

Louise and Christina found the whole experience very moving but well worth while – it’s something they said that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

North Notts Students Out in Force

Recently Public Service, Health and Social Care and Engineering students went to sample the joint Armed Forces Day down at the Prince William of Gloucester Barracks in Grantham.

The weather was extremely windy and bitterly cold, but despite this the students won both the girls and the boys tug of war competitions. Well done to those that took part!

Different teams also took part in the laser shotgun, penalty shootouts and various other challenges including making a pancake with the Royal Logistics Corps.

Despite dangerous winds some of the Tigers Freefall parachute team made a ‘jump’ and landed in the arena – a great feat given the adverse weather.

Before departing they made a stop over at the Royal Marine Commandos and  a couple of students showed a great interest in the weapons on show – Debbie Hibbard, one of the tutors with the group,  did ask the Marines to make sure they had all they  came with!

Caution, scary image!
