Tory Arthurs (16) from Langold was awarded the Student of the Summer Term Award and was presented with his Certificate and Meadowhall gift vouchers by Gill Saville, Deputy Principal of the College, as one of her final duties before retiring this summer.
Tory, a school links student, completed his BTEC vocational study units in Mechanical Performing Engineering Operations to a high standard and has not allowed any distractions to deter him from his work. His tutors Jane Vincent and Hayley Williams, who nominated him for this award, are very pleased to see such a change in Tory attitude. “He has become very focus on his studies this year, with a much deserved result.”
Emma Roberts (17) from Retford, was nominated for this award by her tutor Christopher Groves, who was impressed by Emma’s dedication and drive throughout her time at College, not just during Summer Term. Emma has been studying the Extended Diploma in Engineering Level 3, and is in much demand from local businesses wanting to take her on as an apprenticeship, but she is adamant she wants to continue her studies at Sheffield Hallam University next year.
“As long as I can remember, I have never had a student like Emma, who has exceeded all course expectations (distinctions in all units) and yet still finds the time to help others.” said her tutor Chris. “ She thoroughly deserves to receive this award.”

Twenty Health Care Support workers from Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS have celebrated their success in becoming the first Trust employees to gain Apprenticeships in Health Professions.
Staff working across the hospital sites undertook the Apprenticeship as part of a partnership agreement between Doncaster and Bassetlaw and North Notts College. Over the course they have studied a variety of health related topics and also gained qualifications in maths and English.
To mark the occasion a celebration event was held at North Notts College where learners received their awards from Paul Baylis, Assistant Principle of the College and Tracy Gray the Education Lead for Doncaster and Bassetlaw.
Paul explained: “The learners have worked extremely hard to combine study with work and the success rate has been extremely high.
“Apprenticeships have become a real focus of training for employers and the College and the Trust have already initiated an expansion of the very successful partnership with around sixty more staff now undertaking the Apprenticeship.”

Creative Media Production students at North Nottinghamshire College have teamed up with Environmental Services at Bassetlaw District Council to produce a DVD aimed at raising awareness of recycling amongst the general public.
A group of 13 students designed, scripted and produced a series of short animated films aimed at younger children, teenagers and then adults – highlighting the ease and importance of recycling in the district and the benefits to the environment.
Their films have now been incorporated into one DVD which will be distributed through schools and community groups as well as being available to view in the future on the council’s website.
NNC Lecturer Darren Dutton explained: “Working with Bassetlaw District Council has given the students a real life experience of working for a client and adapting their creative ideas to a specific brief.
“They were highly creative in their approach – adapting and then delivering the messages in all sorts of ways from films featuring super heroes to contemporary film trailers and even spoof ads.
“We are really pleased with the results and the students have a fantastic addition to their portfolios which will be invaluable in their future career plans.”
The Bassetlaw District Council DVD is the latest of a busy year of commissions for students at the Worksop-based College.
Other projects have included producing a short film for the National Trust which will be on permanent display at the new Discovery Centre in Clumber Park. The organisation was so impressed with the students’ work that they have donated a jib (a small crane used for video production) for use at the College.
Students have also produced a short film for the NSPCC about the difficult issue of child grooming in the context of sport which is now used in training for coaches throughout the UK.
Darren continued: “It has been a busy year for the Creative Media Production department – working on a wide range of commissions that have given the students valuable work experience and supported many worthwhile causes and organisations.
“These work experience opportunities are a real win-win, as the organisations benefit from creative material produced at very little cost and our students get the chance to develop skills that they can build on in their future careers.”
