Surprise Nativity Play

Posted December 21st, 2011 by dthornton with Comments Off

Children from North Notts College Early Learners’ Centre (ELC) visited the college’s Learning Resource Centre this week to take part in a Christmas story time with a difference. As well as the usual story time and Christmas Carols organised by Lynda Rose and Janet Higgins, the children also took part in a nativity play organised by Kate Bottley, the College Chaplain, a real treat for staff, family and friends watching.

“The children really enjoyed themselves, especially dressing up for the nativity play, said Carla, the ELC Deputy Manager, they were full of it for the rest of the afternoon, and we all enjoyed ourselves as well!”

North Nottinghamshire College staff and learners dug deep into their pockets to contribute to this year’s Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child ‘Shoebox Appeal’, whose aim is to change someone’s world  and fill a child’s life with joy this Christmas.
“We did so well that WE MANAGED TO TREBLE LAST YEAR’S TOTAL!”, said Kate Bottley, the College’s Chaplain. “This is a fantastic achievement and we can be really proud of our College’s community spirit. The  gifts will make a huge difference to the boys and girls around the world who receive our shoe boxes.”

Posted December 21st, 2011 by dthornton with Comments Off

North Nottinghamshire College’s two INsync salons in Retford were officially re-launched on the 23rd November, following a £120,000 refurbishment.

Since the College took over the salons 18 months ago, they have now been re-branded under INsync, Hair, Beauty and Make-up Training Academy and have been equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to support the students with their courses and provide an industry-standard working environment for them and their clients.

The salons were officially re-launched at an open day where College Governor Kathy Wood cut the ribbon to welcome members of the public, students and their families to the new facilities. “It’s a privilege to attend this celebratory event and to visit these newly refurbished teaching and learning facilities in Retford, said Kathy Wood, College Governor, “These facilities provide students and staff with greatly enhanced accommodation and resources in a realistic working environment, and gives support to the development of skills, knowledge and confidence whilst working with clients.”

Among the students was Katie Finn (17) from Retford who is studying hairdressing.

“The new salon is 100% better and we are extremely busy. We are getting really good work experience and I hope that it will give me a good start in my working life as my goal is to own my own salon.”

Fellow student Adam Mae (19) from Tuxford added: “The facilities are great and tutors are really friendly and supportive. It’s a great atmosphere to work in and everyone gets on really well.”

NNC Project Manager Nikki Slack concluded: “We are delighted with the refurbishment and rebrand of the Retford salons which has provided an up-to-date realistic working environment for the learners to work and study. The facilities will enable them to progress seamlessly into the workplace and provide hair, beauty and nail services for local people wanting the latest treatments at affordable prices.”

Memories of Highfield House

A family who used to live at Highfield House, formerly part of  North Notts College’s Art and Technology department, recently made a return visit and kindly shared some of their memories with us.

Descendants of James Beard, a former miner who came to work as a live-in caretaker at what was then the Rural District Council offices, returned to Highfield House, some for the first time since leaving in the mid-seventies, and had some wonderful stories to tell.

James’s son Ken, who is 90 in December, grew up in the house and, with his brothers and sisters, used to catch the train to Retford to attend a grammar school there. He can remember the cellar being used as an air raid shelter and returning home on leave during the Second World War. Read more

Themed Event: Enjoy & Achieve

Posted December 21st, 2011 by dthornton with Comments Off

The second themed event took place in November, with excess of 500 students and staff attending a variety of events held in NFPC, the LRC and the Getaway over three days.

Richard McCann gave three presentations, in which he enthralled and shocked those attending with recollections of his childhood and adolescence. Learners described the presentation as “inspirational, amazing, absolutely brilliant” with one stating “Really good and we should have more people like this coming in”. This was reinforced enthusiastically by staff.

In conjunction with Worksop Connexions the Guidance team delivered workshops centred around labour market information, job searching and interview application and techniques. There were 14 workshops over two days and the feedback received was very positive and many said that they felt that they were now better prepared for moving on to the world of work, and some showed interest in the guidance team for more individual help and support with their future plans.
