An adult learner at Rhodesia Children’s Centre is starting to turn her new-found skills into a profitable hobby – thanks to training delivered by North Notts College in partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council (ACLS) and is a good example of how partnership working delivers for the community.
Carrie originally started to attend the centre when her daughter Naysa was born and then even more after tragically losing her husband in September 2011 and having to give up work.
Encouraged by other parents at the Centre, Carrie joined one of the North Notts College crafts courses and discovered her love of making jewellery. Carrie stressed how vital it has been for her to have a crèche running alongside the courses so she has been able to attend without the added pressure of having to try and organise childcare.
Since doing the Jewellery course Carrie has found that, socially, it has brought her and the other learners closer, and strong bonds have developed. She has had offers of help and support from other parents and staff at the Centre. They share skills, ideas and parenting tips and have recently started to pass on clothes and toys etc. to each other that their Children have outgrown.
Carrie, who now works part time from home, is planning to attend an advanced Jewellery course that is being delivered in the near future at the Children’s Centre and is hoping to turn these new skills into a profitable hobby – selling at local events and online.
Carrie is pictured receiving her award from Melanie Hancock, tutor and Community Manager.

It has to be said that walking recharges our batteries after tension and stress have drained them of power and energy. So to be offered the opportunity to spend a day walking in a beautiful setting such as the Peak District should not be missed.
That said twelve members of North Notts College, student and staff, set off from Glossop up to Bleaklow Peak on a planned route on Saturday 5th May. This was part of the Dark Peak Challenge, being the middle event of three.
The weather was fair, company good and level of challenge appropriate for the mix levels of age and ability. We all embraced the Olympic ideals, which requires mutual understanding, with a spirit of friendship, solidarity, and fair play. With these ideals I mind we all reached the top and successfully completed the walk.
This left us with a feeling of pleasant tiredness and a calm, clear mind.

Young people from Foundation Learning, Learning Development and the ESF programme worked together for Sport Relief 2012 to organise a range of activities including a bake sale and sponsored walk around Clumber Park.
Our learners worked hard to produce a wide range of scrumptious treats and did a fantastic job of selling them both in the gazebo and also used their initiative by selling them in classrooms and offices across the college! Our learners also gathered lots of sponsors and had a brilliant time walking around Clumber Lake.
Due to the amazing generosity of staff at college, friends and families, we have raised £346.76 for this worthwhile cause. Many thanks to all involved and to those who sponsored us or bought some cakes!

Celebration of achievements were held in Manton and Langold Sure Start Centre where certificates were presented to mums and dads who have completed courses whilst their children are playing and being supervised by trained staff at the centre. They also held an open day to encourage young families to come and look around the centres. Diversity in action with a wide range of nationalities at the Manton Centre with an international cuisine buffet supplied by the students.
A colourful sensory panel, which has been design and created by local families depicting the four seasons in just ten weeks, was unveiled at Harworth Children’s Centre on the 17th May by Ian Campbell, Chairman to Bassetlaw Council. Ian Campbell, unveiled the panel expressing his delight at the commitment and dedication of all involved in the project and acknowledged the hard work and effort that had gone into creating such a masterpiece. He said “It is fantastic that parents have worked together and created this for their community and for future parents and children to enjoy at the centre.” Ian also presented the parents with certificates.
Jane Tomson, one of the volunteers commented “I really had a great time taking part and enjoyed every minute. I feel really proud and privileged to have been involved in the project.”
“The pictures do not do justice to the imagination and detail that has gone into this; said Melanie Hancock, Community Manager
at the College. “All the hard work and dedication by staff and volunteers has truly paid off to produce such a vibrant and outstanding display piece. A staggering achievement and one that all who took part should be very proud of.”
