Young people from North Notts College have been working with the Forestry Commission and Whitwell Wood Natural History Group to improve the habitat for birds in local woodland.

Michael Cox , College tutor, together with Foundation Learning construction students have been working in Whitwell Wood for the past two years helping to protect this important local habitat which is enjoyed by many residents of the area. They were approached by Eleanor Wilkins, a representative of the group, to see if they could help in constructing a number of nest boxes to be put up around the wood ready for nesting season.

The timber was supplied free of charge by Gibbs and Dandy of Worksop. Dan Harris, who arranged donation of the timber, said; “Gibbs and Dandy are always happy to help the local community and we were delighted to contribute to this environmental project.”

Eleanor added, “Whitwell Wood Natural History Group values greatly the contribution of NNC students and Gibbs and Dandy Timber Merchants. Thanks to their efforts, we can continue our ongoing research into studying the breeding birds of Whitwell Wood in a measured way. The nest boxes form a valuable part of my MSc project in ornithology, conducted with the help of the Forestry Commission. Data from our long term bird monitoring programme contributes to the national picture of how our birds are faring and coping with environmental change.”

Amy Chandler, Community Ranger with the Forestry Commission, said,” It is great to see NNC working closely with the Whitwell Wood Natural History Group on this project. Using the skills of the students to make the bird boxes needed for the long term monitoring of birds in Whitwell Wood adds value to the work the college has been doing there for the last two years.”

Hayden Wilkinson ( 17) from Carlton in Lindrick,  was recently pictured receiving his award from Paul Baylis, Assistant Principal at the college.  Hayden had a troubled start when he first came to North Notts College but is now excelling in plumbing , said his course tutor Ryan Walker, who nominated Hayden for the Student of the Term award. He is currently working at a level 2-3 rate even though he is studying a level 1 course and is a credit to the group.  Hayden is a hard working individual who has become a role model for all the other students in his group.

Recently James was interviewed for a trailer fitter position at a large haulage company and has been offered a position.  He will now complete his studies for this year and progress onto the College’s Apprenticeship programme next year.

Strictly Learn to Dance

strictly

On Friday 22nd March first year Creative Media Production students recorded “Strictly Learn To Dance”, an event held at Retford Town Hall in aid of Bassetlaw Hospice. Mirroring the successful TV format of BBC’s Strictly, volunteer couples who had never danced before had 10 weeks to learn the cha cha cha and quickstep.

The Media students were commissioned by the organisers to produce a DVD of the event and had to produce the show live, without editing, using an outside broadcast multi-camera set-up. All live TV shows and many pre-recorded ones filmed ‘as live’ use this technique – X Factor, quiz shows, sport events etc. This requirement of ‘live edit’ made the event quite stressful for the students as everything had to be right on the night. In order to do this the students had to learn to use a variety of different studio equipment and created a camera script to make sure cameras were in the right places at the right times. Working as a team meant that communication was vital.

A letter was sent to the Principal from Helen Eshelby, Fund Raising and Events Co-ordinator giving her thanks to the students from The Media Studies Department and Insync Hair and Beauty for giving up so much of their time to film the event. She said: “Personally I would like to thank Darren Dutton, Elizabeth Mossop and Karen Connole for all their help in getting the students ready for this event. All those involved were a credit to college and should be recognised for their contribution to a wonderful cause.

We can’t wait to see the DVD they are producing as it will create lasting memories of a very special evening for all those involved.”
