SINGLE EQUALITY SCHEME

The College has developed its Single Equality Scheme to reflect the recent Equality Act, which recently became law. The public sector equality duty will apply from April 2011, when this scheme will be updated.

The new Equality Bill combines nine separate pieces of legislation into one single act. The Act protects employees, students and people who access the College’s goods, services and facilities from discrimination on the basis of ‘protected characteristics’ which include:

  • Race
  • Sex
  • Disability (or because of something connected with their disability)
  • Sexual orientation (lesbian, gay or heterosexual)
  • Religion or belief
  • Gender reassignment/being a transsexual person
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Being married or in a civil partnership (employees only as at October 2011)
  • Age (Employees only as at October 2011)

Equality and Diversity is managed by the E and D Management Group in the college, supported by the E and D committee which represents both staff and students. The various action plans in the SES are monitored by the Management Group and will be updated on the website twice a year.
