Mechanical Engineer

Average salary - £32,000*

Mechanical Engineers develop and design the components and machinery used in manufacturing, construction and other industries.

Day-to-day tasks:

Turn research ideas into technical plans using computer aided design/ modelling (CAD/CAM), research and assess new products and innovations, present design plans and data, oversee maintenance programmes and quality control and manage technicians.**

Working environments:

At a client’s business, in an office or in a factory.

Welder

Average salary - £26,900*

Welders cut, join and shape metal plate, pipework and composite materials in the aerospace, construction and civil engineering industries.

Day to day tasks:

Follow engineering drawings and instructions for each job, check dimensions and thickness of materials to be welded, prepare and set out sections to be joined or repaired, operate welding equipment, inspect and test welds and join using precision measuring instruments and dismantle and cut up metal in structures that are being demolished.**

Working environments:

In a workshop, on a construction site or on a demolition site.
