A slice of success

Lorien Storey started her dream business after participating in one of North Notts community courses. The short part-time cake decoration course opened a whole new world for her, developing a creative side she didn’t know she had.  Lorien now runs her own successful cake decorating business and is often fully booked months in advance. She organises her busy days fitting her business commitments around looking after three children, one only 12 weeks old.

Lorien enrolled on a cake decoration course after wanting to create better birthday cakes for her children. She admits she didn’t know much about decorating cakes and found the course fascinating.

“Sue Brown, the tutor, really inspired me to keep learning about cake decorating and to keep challenging myself to do bigger and better designs.  The course was brilliant and I learnt such a lot, I have a great deal to thank her for. The class has given me so much confidence as well and I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t taken that first step.  It definitely set me on the right path.”

“I started primarily with orders from friends and family but have now built up a good clientele base and a lot of my work comes via word of mouth or repeat custom. I have a websitewww.storeybookcakes.co.uk to showcase my designs, this has really helped to move forward into the wedding cake market which is where my passion lies most, I love being able to create cakes for such special occasions.

Lorien won Silver when she entered her first competition in the Cake International in March, a great achievement from such humble beginnings.

Sue Brown, her tutor commented; “From the first time Lorien started making flowers I could see she had a very creative eye and a knack for making flowers. I am so pleased she has continued to push the boundaries of cake decoration and am thrilled with her achievements.  Winning Silver is quite an accomplishment for your first international competition, and I wish her all the best for the future.”
