ESOL students in a boxing session

ESOL Students Complete Six Week Boxing Fitness Course

12 June 2017

ESOL students at North Notts College have completed a six week course in Boxing Fitness delivered by Chris Boyle, Head Coach from Xbox Boxing Academy in Worksop. This is part of a timetabled enrichment programme that the group have participated in throughout the year.

The sessions were organised by Lucy Willets, College Sport Maker at Worksop. Lucy said, ‘The group have really enjoyed taking part in these sessions, it was completely new to most of them and they have embraced the opportunity and had a fantastic time doing so. A couple in the class have now gone on to join Chris’ club in Worksop.’

Coach Chris added, ‘This group have been tremendous. To say we have had such a vast mix of not just nationalities but also personalities is an understatement and from session one this group have got involved and given it their all. It’s been really engaging to see the mix in action, everyone has communicated through Boxing and I feel the confidence each person will take forward will be of great use to them.’

The group have taken part in a variety of sporting activities throughout the year and have also utilised the college fitness suite. It has been a great way for the group to build up their confidence, communication and English language skills as well as to help them to lead an active lifestyle.

Mel Hancock, Adult and Community Learning Manager commented, ‘The ESOL group have been given the opportunity to take part in a sport that they had never attempted before. Many of the learners are from countries where sport isn’t taught or seen as important. One learner, who is from Afghanistan, has continued with the sessions outside of College and joined the club attending on a regular basis. He has quite a talent for boxing which has also helped him integrate with other people from the local community, while also helping to support his speaking and listening of the English language.’
