Art and Design Students Paint a Bright Future With End of Year Success

4 July 2019

Retford Post 16 Centre Art and Design students have had their hard work throughout the academic year recognised with end of year awards including Learner of The Year and a more novel student-nominated Plunger award.

The awards were handed out by Programme Lead in Art and Design Jonathan Roberts and included the students showcasing creations they have produced throughout their studies.

North Notts College delivers several cutting-edge Art and Design course of varying levels at Retford Post 16 Centre.

Level 3 Art and Design Extended Diploma student Alex Waddingham won the Learner of The Year award. They showcased their art in the main common area of the Centre.

Alex said: “I’ve made two large pieces based around body image; they’re both based on skin conditions with one being freckled and the other vitiligo.

“It took me over a week to complete; I started with smaller scale stuff to trial out the colour combinations of red yellow and blue for dramatic effect. I was inspired by some photography work and stylised these to portray skin conditions in an attention-grabbing way.”

Alex added: “From first to second year I think my confidence has grown a lot. I wasn’t expecting to win but am really impressed that I did.

“I’m off to Leeds Beckett University to study Illustration and will be moving to Leeds. I’m excited and nervous about the journey ahead!”

Foundation Diploma in Art and Design student Abigail Woodward won the unique student-nominated Plunger award. Abigail’s work was also on display in the centre’s common area.

Abigail said: “I’ve produced a visual story based off of Greek Mythology. I’ve turned the story of Medusa on its’ head to show that she isn’t a villain but is instead simply misunderstood.”

“I’ve included the fates from Greek Mythology – the three old lady who cut string which kills a person’s soul.”

Abigail added: “The Plunger Award was student nominated; they voted based on who they think performed well throughout the year.

“I’ll be going to Sheffield Hallam this September to study Animation. I want to explore all aspects of it but am in particular excited by 2D animation.

“I’ve been at Retford Post 16 Centre for three years. I’ve enjoyed my time here and am looking forward to moving onwards and upwards.”

Programme Lead in Art and Design Jonathan Roberts handed out the awards to the learners.

Jonathan remarked: “It is wonderful to see our students grow and develop confidence in their artistic abilities.

“With their skills developed here, some of our students will be progressing on to university to gain degree-level qualifications which will only open even more doors for their future.

“The standard of work produced this year is something they should be proud of; I am and I look forward to hearing all about their continued success.”
