Top Talent Goes Toe-to-Toe in Inter-College Championship

15 April 2020

North Notts College learners put their skills to the test against rivals at the Grimsby Institute in this year’s thrilling annual Inter College Championship.

The contest, hosted by RNN Group, saw 300 learners compete across 16 subjects at the group’s three college sites of Rotherham College, North Notts College and Dearne Valley College. Winners were decided by a judging panel from RNN Group, Grimsby Institute and external employers.

Despite North Notts College claiming wins in several subject areas, Grimsby clinched overall success with a final score of 56-48. North Notts College won in Childcare, Electrical Installation and Media Make-up.

Childcare learners were tasked with creating a story sack for 3-4-year olds which featured three props that accompanied the story and a game to promote pre-school development.

Electrical Installation learners tackled the installation of a range of fittings and the Media Make-up department created a graffiti-glam inspired look. Phoebe Longworth, the winning entrant in the Media Make-up competition created a striking look inspired by the prominent #BeKind movement.

Grimsby Institute Assistant Principal Julie Moore said the competition is something they look forward to all year round.

She said: “We are happy for the win, but it doesn’t really matter who takes home the victory – as long as the learners enjoy it and they all benefit from working together. It’s been a brilliant day; it’s one of the highlights of the students’ study programme. They have been talking about it and preparing for a long time, it’s been inspiring seeing them develop their skills from competence to excellence.”

North Notts College Assistant Principal Angela Bates was on-hand at the event to offer encouragement to learners.

Angela said: “Over the last few years this has become a staple in the College calendar and an opportunity for all learners to showcase their talent and skills. I’ve been blown away by the standard of work produced by everyone across all curriculum areas.

“I am so proud of all of our learners and the hard work that they have put into these challenges; I know that all areas were closely fought with the judges facing tough decisions. We look forward to travelling to Grimsby next year for the 2021 Inter College Championship and returning the trophy to its rightful home!”
