High-quality Workshops Spark Increased Demand for Trades Training at North Notts College

20 October 2020

A significant recent investment in electrical and plumbing workshops at North Notts College has seen a surge in enrolments on the trades courses at the College.

The buoyant student numbers follow the relocation of the courses from an industrial unit in Shireoaks to two purpose-built workshops at the College’s Carlton Road campus.

The increased space for both subject areas ensures students now have more bays for practical sessions, as well as dedicated classrooms and computer rooms for theory sessions. Face-to-face sessions are complemented by online sessions using Google Classroom and G Suite for Education.

North Notts College Curriculum Manager for Plumbing and Electrical, Andy Goodall, has overseen the development of the new workshops.

Andy said: “These new workshops have reinvigorated our electrical and plumbing courses. The students are much more engaged in these modern facilities, and the extra space has been important particularly considering the current social distancing measures.

“Our plumbing course has attracted more students this year than we had expected, and these facilities definitely played a part in ensuring that we could accommodate the extra demand.

“There are plans to build 6,500 homes in Bassetlaw over the next 15 years. Demand for highly-skilled tradespeople will only increase. Our investment in these spaces, as well as our new AM2 Testing Centre and soon to be built Gas Testing Centre, ensures that we can play our part in training the next generation of plumbers and electricians.”

One of those future plumbers is Jacob Lacey who is studying Level 2 Plumbing, who has his future mapped out.

Jacob said: “I chose to study at North Notts College because I heard the course here was good and that I’d learn how to actually do the job. The skills I’m gaining on this course will allow me to move onto a Plumbing apprenticeship and eventually to run my own business.”
