Bricklaying – Joseph

Level 2 NVQ Bricklaying

Returning to education as an adult, Joseph has reignited his passion for bricklaying while building practical skills and confidence. Balancing full-time work with his evening course, he’s learned everything from foundational techniques to decorative brickwork.

Practical experience on site has given him a real sense of achievement, whether completing walls, houses, or garden features. With his Level 2 NVQ underway, Joseph is preparing to run his own team or business and continue growing in the industry.

Why did you choose to study your course?

“When I was 17, I started an apprenticeship in bricklaying. At the time, leaving school meant picking something to do, so I gave it a go, but I didn’t finish it.

After that, I worked in the engineering industry as a yard assistant and labourer, which felt like a dead-end. Thinking back to bricklaying, I remembered how much I enjoyed it, so I decided to come back and complete the course.”

Which skills have you developed during your course?

“The course covers everything involved in bricklaying. Level 1 teaches the foundations, like mixing materials and knowing which materials to use and how to use them.

Level 2 builds on that and adds more detailed techniques, including decorative brickwork such as recessed and overhanging bricks, which give buildings a bit of style.”

How has the College supported you so far?

“When I first started the course, I was starting from scratch, so the tutors guided me step by step. They don’t just help you pass the course, they show you skills that are useful for work too.

If I ever need help, they’re always available. They check in while you’re working, but you can also approach them whenever you have a question.”

What part of the course have you enjoyed the most?

“Laying the bricks has been the most satisfying part. It looks good in videos, but doing it yourself is even better. It’s not just a career skill, it’s enjoyable.

There’s a great feeling of achievement when you finish something and think, ‘I built that.’ I’ve also enjoyed seeing the different patterns and styles come together, whether on walls, houses, or garden features.”

Can you share any challenges you have overcome?

“Balancing the course with work has been tough. Studying at night school while working full-time means long days, often starting early and finishing late after college.

Even though it’s tiring, it’s worth it. By the end, I’ll have the skills and qualifications to move forward in my career.”

Do you have any advice for future students?

“I’d definitely encourage it. When you’re considering something new, you usually either feel positive about it or not.

If you feel excited or interested, go for it. Taking that step can open up opportunities, build skills, and help you achieve your goals.”

Where do you see yourself in five years?

“I’d like to run my own bricklaying team on site or start a small business.

After finishing Level 2, I plan to gain more on-site experience and, if Level 3 is an option later, I’d consider it. It could open up further opportunities, including project management roles and more responsibility on-site.”
