Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Creative Media Practice

Switching from Digital Marketing to Media marked a turning point for James Haslam.

What began as a curiosity for digital tools quickly became a passion for creative storytelling. With support from tutors and access to professional software, he’s grown in confidence, discovered new strengths, and developed his creative voice.

Why did you choose to study your course?

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve liked computers, so choosing a course involving digital tools just felt right. It felt familiar, comfortable, and something I could quickly get into. Once I looked into the course, it seemed like something I’d enjoy – and I have.

What I really like is the flexibility. You can focus on the areas you’re most interested in, like video editing or design, but you’re also encouraged to explore new things. It means everyone’s journey through the course is a bit different, and that keeps it interesting.”

Which key skills have you developed during your course?

“Over the last year, I have developed a lot of editing skills. I’ve learned how to edit videos well, and I know which platforms I can go to depending on the kind of creative work I’m doing. I’ve improved a lot with transitions too – I’m good at making them smooth and seamless between clips, which makes the videos feel more professional.

So far, I’ve created two videos and two art designs. For the art designs, I used Adobe Illustrator, and for the videos, I used CapCut.”

“Definitely be open to trying different things. I started in Marketing before moving to Media, so don’t worry if your path changes – it’s all part of figuring out what suits you best.”

How has the College supported you so far?

“Overall the College has been extremely supportive. Having free access to tools like Adobe Creative Cloud makes things much easier. All of the tutors, especially Grant and Harry have been great.

Grant taught me last year in Marketing, so he already knew me when I joined Media. That made a difference, especially when I was first getting used to Illustrator. I had a few issues at the start, but he came over and helped me fix them. Illustrator can be tricky when you’re new to it, so having that extra help helped me get more confident.”

What part of the course have you enjoyed the most?

“One of the standout moments for me was working on a health-based project – I got to design and edit content that raised awareness of a real issue. It made the work feel more purposeful, and I enjoyed the challenge of making it both informative and visually engaging.

Being able to switch between different types of projects, like video and digital art, keeps things interesting and helps me build a more well-rounded skill set. It’s creative, but also gives you space to grow technically. I’ve especially liked bringing creative ideas to life using software like CapCut and Illustrator.”

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help. The tutors know what they’re doing and are happy to support you.”

Do you have any advice for future students?

“Definitely be open to trying different things. I started in Marketing before moving to Media, so don’t worry if your path changes – it’s all part of figuring out what suits you best.

Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help. The tutors know what they’re doing and are happy to support you, especially when you’re using software like Adobe for the first time.”

Where do you see yourself in five years?

“In five years, I’d like to be doing something in Marketing – ideally working in a role where I’m helping businesses attract new clients using creative content. I’ve built up a lot of confidence with digital tools like CapCut and Illustrator, so I’d love to keep developing those skills.

I’m also thinking about moving on to the Level 4 course to build up my knowledge even more and open up more career options in the future.”
