GCSE English – Samantha
GCSE English
Samantha is studying a Part-Time GCSE English course every Tuesday evening while running her own bakery, Patricia’s Patisserie. Keen to move on to a business course, she has used the support available to build skills, boost confidence, and manage learning challenges. Her story shows how flexible adult courses help people grow personally and professionally, achieving their goals while following passions outside the classroom.
Why did you choose to study your course?
“I chose to study English because I want to progress onto a business course in the future. Being dyslexic, I knew I needed extra support to improve my English skills and build my confidence, especially after struggling at school. I studied maths and English over two years and only just passed maths last year. This year, I’m focusing on English so I can keep developing my skills and work towards the entry requirements I need to move on to a business course.”
Which key skills have you developed during your course?
“Over time, my communication skills have gotten a lot better. In the first year, I couldn’t speak to anyone or even put my hand up, but now I’ll just answer. It’s also helped with my anxiety a bit and encouraged me to get out more. In addition, my social skills have improved, alongside my writing skills and spelling. Finally, it’s helped me with structuring everything, which I use in my studies and everyday life.”
How has the College supported you so far?
“The College has given me a lot of support in lessons, which has helped me gain the confidence to speak up more. You’ve also helped during exams by putting the right support in place, like extra time or rest breaks, and all of that has really helped me.”
“My mentor Denise has helped me from my first year. She’s encouraged me to come out of my shell, helped me understand the work better than I could on my own, and given me the confidence to know my work is correct.”
Samantha“What I’ve enjoyed most is how well the course fits around my other commitments. Studying in the evening allows me to focus on my business in the morning before attending lessons.”
What part of the course have you enjoyed the most?
“What I’ve enjoyed most is how well the course fits around my other commitments. Studying in the evening allows me to focus on my business in the morning before attending lessons. Along the way, I’ve been able to improve my social skills and meet new people, as well as make friends from past courses. Overall, this course fits perfectly with my schedule and has been a really positive experience.”
Can you share any challenges you have overcome?
“I’ve overcome a lot of challenges with my anxiety and confidence. In the first year, I would stay in my shell with my headphones on, but now I can speak to any staff and participate in lessons. It’s also helped me improve my eye contact and speaking confidence, and I’ve learnt how to cope with stressful situations.”
“In addition, I have Asperger’s Syndrome, non-epileptic attack disorder, which is seizures, anxiety, depression and short-term memory issues. These conditions can make learning and everyday situations more challenging. However, with the support I’ve received from the College, I’ve been able to build my confidence, improve my communication, and manage these challenges while continuing my studies.”
Do you have any advice for future students?
“My advice would be: don’t be scared. I know it’s scary, but try not to be afraid because everyone in the College is lovely and you will get the support you need. When I was in school 10 years ago, I had none of this support, but now I’m getting the help, extra time, and resources I need. Additionally, if I’m having a rough day with my disabilities, I can go home early or catch up online, which makes a big difference.”
Where do you see yourself in five years?
“In five years, I hope to have passed English and then move on to a business course. I also have my own business outside of college, so I want to improve my skills to help it grow. I have a bakery called Patricia’s Patisserie, and I want to put more qualifications into the business so I can keep expanding and developing it.”
