Level 2 Gym Instructor – Adult Evening Course
Passionate about fitness, Lynn joined our Level 2 Gym Instructor adult evening course to expand her knowledge and gain confidence. Throughout the programme, she grew skills, overcame initial anxieties, and built strong connections with peers. Looking ahead, she hopes to continue her role as a Learning Support Assistant while supporting others in the gym and contributing to curriculum activities.
Why did you choose to study your course?
โI have always enjoyed going to the gym, but I had never fully used all of the equipment. One goal was to understand different types of equipment and how their use could benefit me. The other goal was to help with the gym in my workplace, being able to support others with their health and well-being, and setting up circuit training sessions.โ
Which key skills have you developed during your course?
โAnatomy and physiology, how our bodies respond to exercise, the short-term and long-term effects exercise can have on the body, and the benefits. How we can use alternative equipment and get the same results. Adapt the exercises to be able to do them at home. A workout session in the gym isnโt all about how much weight you can lift. The training session you set for yourself is used to meet your end goal.โ
Lynn – Adult Learner“Being a more mature adult in a group of younger adults, I have been included in everything and felt welcome and part of the group from day one.”
How has the College supported you so far?
โOur tutor has been amazing with any support or queries I have had and dealt with them straight away. Being a more mature adult in a group of younger adults, I have been included in everything and felt welcome and part of the group from day one.โ
What part of the course have you enjoyed the most?
โI am really enjoying getting to know others in my group. They have been very supportive and helpful, passing on and sharing their knowledge and skills they already have from their experiences of using gyms.โ
Can you share any challenges you have overcome?
โI think the challenge for me was my own anxiety of being a more mature adult in a group of much younger people. Would I fit in and be accepted? A job where instructors are much younger people and mainly have a background in fitness. With support, I have been able to overcome this and feel part of the group.โ

Do you have any advice for future students?
โDonโt be afraid to make mistakes; it’s all part of learning. Put your ideas forward, as you will have skills and experience you can pass onto others. Challenge yourself to come out of your comfort zone. It enables you to be more confident, adapt to new situations, learn new skills, and meet new people.โ
Where do you see yourself in five years?
โHaving spent 23 years as a Learning Support Assistant at North Notts College, I hope to continue in this role, while also supporting others in using gym equipment. With this qualification, I aim to supervise lunchtime Gym sessions and help support curriculum staff with physical activities.โ
