Supported Internship

Through his work placements, Supported Intern Jakob has developed valuable catering skills while becoming more independent in both work and everyday life.

Now on placement with Aramark in the College bistro, he has quickly become a valued member of the team, recognised for his dedication and progress.

Why did you decide to pursue catering?

“I first started working as an intern when I was doing some work experience at a café in town. I got used to the kitchen environment and really enjoyed helping out there.

After that, I moved on to another placement at Fusion Energy Café and eventually started my internship here at Aramark. Each step helped me build my skills and feel more confident working in a kitchen.”

Which skills have you developed during your course?

“I’ve developed skills like preparing food, washing dishes, and helping with different tasks in the kitchen.

Now I’m more independent and confident. I get told what needs doing and then get on with it. It’s helped me get used to a busy environment and stay focused, while enjoying the variety of tasks I do each day.”

“The College has been there whenever I’ve needed help. If I get unsure about something, there’s always someone to guide me and help me feel confident again.”

How has the College supported you so far?

“At the beginning, I had travel training support. Someone travelled with me on the train and bus at first, then gradually stepped back so I could travel independently.

The College has been there whenever I’ve needed help. If I get unsure about something, there’s always someone to guide me and help me feel confident again.

I’ve also had support from a job coach. They helped bridge the gap between my placement and the course, making sure I felt confident and supported in the workplace.”

What part of the course have you enjoyed the most?

“I enjoy that the work is structured and not rushed. When I feel rushed, I sometimes forget things or get confused, so having time to focus properly makes me feel more capable and calm.

I also enjoy working with the team and being able to complete tasks at my own pace, while contributing to the smooth running of the bistro.”

Can you share any challenges you have overcome?

“One challenge for me has been talking to new people. I sometimes find it tricky when meeting someone for the first time.

Over time, I’ve become more confident opening up and talking to people, which has really helped me feel more comfortable and positive in new situations.”

Where do you see yourself in five years?

“I’m not completely sure about the future yet, but this internship has helped me think about working in a kitchen and the opportunities available.

I’d like to continue doing similar work, preparing food and working in catering. I might not feel ready to do it full-time yet, but this experience has given me confidence to aim for that in the future.”
