Animal Care Worker

Average salary - £21,000 - £24,000*

Animal care workers look after animals in kennels, rescue centres, pet shops and sanctuaries.

Day to day tasks:

Check animals daily and monitor their health and behaviour, clean out kennels, enclosures, cages or stables, prepare food and help out at feeding times, clean and groom animals, exercise animals regularly, look after sick or distressed animals, update records and deal with questions from colleagues or the public.*

Working environments:

You could work at an animal welfare centre, at a wildlife park, in kennels or at a store. Your working environment may be outdoors some of the time, physically demanding and dirty.*

Horticultural Worker

Average salary - £19,500 to £24,000*

Horticultural Workers grow plants in garden nurseries, work in food production, and maintain parks and gardens.

Day to day tasks:

Plant seeds and bulbs to grow plants and shrubs, water, weed, prune, feed and spray plants, advise customers about plants and how to look after them, maintain plant and soil health, and control pests, pick, sort and pack items to be delivered and serve customers.*

Working environments:

You could work in a garden, in a park, on a country estate, at a garden centre or on a farm. Your working environment may be outdoors in all weathers.*
