Looked After Children (LAC)
Care Experienced Learners, Looked After Children and Care Leavers
RNN Group (Rotherham College, North Notts College, and Dearne Valley College) works closely with Virtual School Heads, Social Workers, Personal Advisors (PAs), Care Leaving Teams, parents/carers, and other support professionals to ensure that young people in care and care leavers are given the best chance to succeed, no matter their circumstances.
Students who disclose that they are care-experienced (looked after or care leavers) are supported by our Designated Lead for Looked After Children & Care Leavers. The Lead is available to discuss our college offer, arrange campus tours, and provide tailored support to ensure the best possible preparation for college life and progression into independent living or further study.
Our Designated Lead collaborates with external professionals, carers, and key networks to support:
Post-16 Personal Education Plans (PEPs): Completing termly statutory PEP reviews for students with looked-after status.
Pathway Plans: Aligning college support with care leavers’ statutory Pathway Plans in partnership with their Personal Advisors (PAs).
Financial Support & Bursaries
Students who are looked after or care leavers are eligible to apply for enhanced financial support, including the 16–19 Vulnerable Student Bursary (or care leaver support funds for adult learners). Our team can assist with completing the college bursary application alongside a status confirmation letter from the local authority or Personal Advisor.
