Bricklaying – Leahh

Level 1 Bricklaying

Returning to education, Leahh has been building confidence while gaining practical experience through our Level 1 Bricklaying evening course. Alongside shift work and other commitments, she enjoys the hands-on challenges that help her develop both technical expertise and personal skills.

Now focused on progressing through further training and an apprenticeship, Leahh is steadily moving toward a rewarding career in the construction industry.

Why did you choose to study your course?

“Looking for something new to focus on, I decided I wanted to learn a proper trade. Bricklaying felt like a good option because it could lead to a real job in the future. After talking things through with my partner and thinking about my previous jobs, coming back into education felt like the right step to take.”

Which skills have you developed during your course?

“From the start, I’ve learned the basics of bricklaying, including measuring and lining everything up properly. Alongside that, I’ve developed my confidence when working on practical tasks. On top of this, communication has improved too, especially when working with others onsite.”

“The evening course fits well around my life when I’m on morning shifts. More importantly, everyone here is really supportive.”

How has the College supported you so far?

“Balancing college with shift work can sometimes be difficult, especially when I’m working late. Even so, the evening course fits well around my life when I’m on morning shifts. More importantly, everyone here is really supportive, and coming in helps me switch off from anything going on outside college.”

What part of the course have you enjoyed the most?

“Meeting new people has been a big highlight for me. At the same time, learning a completely new skill has been really enjoyable. Being a hands-on person, I love getting stuck into practical work and learning different techniques on walls and blocks.”

Can you share any challenges you have overcome?

“At first, I didn’t realise how hard bricklaying could be. Although it looks easy, it actually takes a lot of focus and patience. Through practice and support from others, I’ve learned to challenge myself and keep improving.”

Do you have any advice for future students?

“If you’re thinking about it, I’d say just go for it. From day one, everyone is friendly and welcoming. Even though I’m the only girl in the group, the lads have always been supportive and willing to help. Overall, it’s a really enjoyable course and worth giving a try.”

Where do you see yourself in five years?

“In the future, I definitely see myself working on a building site. With this Level 1 course being short and practical, it’s a great starting point. After finishing, I’d like to move on to Level 2 and then into an apprenticeship to build my career properly.”
