Project-Based Learning

After being homeschooled throughout his education, Joshua enrolled on the Project-Based Learning course to help him transition into college life. Having already decided on his future career, the programme gave him the confidence to settle into a new learning environment and prepare for the next stage of his education.

With renewed confidence, Joshua is now ready to take the next steps towards his goal of becoming a fully qualified electrician.

Why did you choose to study your course?

“I chose this course because I’d been homeschooled all my life, so this was my first experience of learning in a college environment. I saw it as a great introduction to college before moving on to my chosen Electrical course.

“It gave me the opportunity to get used to college life and make that transition gradually rather than going straight into a vocational programme.”

Which skills have you developed during your course?

“The biggest thing I’ve developed is confidence. Before starting, I wasn’t sure what to expect because I’d never been in a college environment before, but now I’m 100% confident about attending college.

“I’d already decided I wanted to become an electrician, so the Electrical taster sessions reinforced that I’d chosen the right career. They’ve helped me develop some basic practical skills and given me a clearer understanding of what I want to do professionally.”

How did College support you during your studies?

“The support from College has been excellent throughout the course. My tutors have helped me understand what I need to do next and explained the steps I need to take to achieve my goals.

“I’ve also studied Maths and English alongside the course, which has helped me prepare for my next programme. Everyone has been really supportive throughout.”

“I’ve enjoyed being introduced to college life the most. The course eased me into the environment, which made the transition much less daunting.

“I’ve also enjoyed meeting new people. Everyone has been really friendly and sociable, so I’ve made friends and settled in well.”

Can you share any challenges you have overcome?

“One of my biggest challenges was feeling nervous about coming to college. Because I’d been homeschooled, I didn’t know what to expect and lacked confidence at first.

“Since completing the course, I’ve overcome those nerves completely. I now feel comfortable attending college every day and I’m much more certain about the career path I want to follow.”

Do you have any advice for future students?

“My advice would be to listen to your teachers, follow their guidance and keep turning up. The tutors are there to help you and guide you through everything.

“I’ve had 100% attendance throughout the course, and that commitment has helped me make the most of the opportunity.”

Where do you see yourself in five years?

“In five years, I want to be a fully qualified electrician. My plan is to complete my GCSEs, progress through Levels 1, 2 and 3 in Electrical, and then secure an apprenticeship.

“I’m a hands-on learner, so an apprenticeship is the route I’d really like to take. This course has given me the confidence and foundation to begin that journey.”
