Welding – John
Level 1 TIG Welding
Metalwork has always been a passion for John, and at age 64 he decided to build on his skills by learning TIG welding. Joining the Level 1 evening course, he threw himself into hands-on sessions, enjoying the chance to focus on the craft he loves while learning at his own pace.
Guided by friendly tutors and inspired by welcoming classmates, John has developed practical techniques he can use on projects at home. Every piece he creates brings a sense of pride and accomplishment, showing that pursuing a hobby can be rewarding at any age.
Why did you choose to study your course?
“I’m 64 and wanted to do something meaningful in my spare time. I’ve done a bit of welding before, but I wanted to refresh my skills and bring them up to date. I’m also registered disabled, so I needed a supportive and flexible environment.”
“The course has been excellent, allowing me to work at my own pace without any pressure. The tutor has been great, and the other students have been friendly, so I’ve even made some friends. It’s close to home, and attending has been easy, which made the experience even more enjoyable.”
Which skills have you developed during your course?
“I’ve learned to be more safety conscious, making sure I do tasks in the right order and use correct methods. TIG welding requires focus, especially as you get older, and I’ve gained confidence in handling equipment safely. This awareness has made me feel more competent and assured.”
“Alongside safety, I’ve developed practical TIG techniques that let me create intricate metalwork, beyond what I could achieve with just riveting. I can apply these skills at home for ornaments, furniture, and garden projects. Completing projects myself also gives a strong sense of accomplishment.”
John“The course has been excellent, allowing me to work at my own pace without any pressure. The tutor has been great, and the other students have been friendly.”
How has the College supported you so far?
“I haven’t needed special requirements, but the tutor and staff have been very patient and supportive. Everyone is approachable, which made it easy to ask questions or get help when needed. I’ve had nothing but positive experiences from registration to course completion.”
“The friendly environment, along with supportive students, has made learning enjoyable and stress-free. I felt welcomed from day one, which helped me focus fully on developing my skills. This support has been key to my confidence and progress.”
What part of the course have you enjoyed the most?
“The practical, hands-on work has been the highlight for me. I enjoy learning new techniques and seeing a finished piece come together. Being able to work independently while also receiving guidance has been perfect for my learning style.”
“I’ve also valued working in a small, quiet group, which made the sessions manageable and focused. The combination of guidance and freedom helped me build skills efficiently. Overall, the practical work has been the most rewarding aspect of the course.”
Can you share any challenges you have overcome?
“At first, I didn’t realise how much focus and patience welding would require, especially TIG work. Even simple tasks needed careful attention, and I had to adjust to the precision needed for intricate pieces. With practice and tutor support, I’ve learned to challenge myself and improve steadily.”
“Balancing the course with other commitments could sometimes be tricky, but the evening sessions fit around my schedule. I’ve also adapted to working safely despite being older and having a disability. Overcoming these challenges has made completing the course even more satisfying.”
John“Even if you’re returning to education later in life, it’s never too late to start. The evening course is ideal, especially for adults or those with disabilities, because it’s quieter and easier to manage.”
Do you have any advice for future students?
“Even if you’re returning to education later in life, it’s never too late to start. The evening course is ideal, especially for adults or those with disabilities, because it’s quieter and easier to manage. You can focus on learning without feeling rushed or crowded.”
“Don’t hesitate to ask for help or take your time to learn. Everyone is friendly and supportive, which makes it easier to get the most out of the course. Just give it a try – you’ll feel proud of what you achieve and enjoy the experience.”
Where do you see yourself in five years?
“I’ve completed Level 1 TIG Welding, which is enough for my personal projects at home. I plan to return for another welding course, such as stick welding, which will allow me to work outdoors and continue developing my skills. I want to keep creating ornaments, garden furniture, and decorative metalwork.”
“I may also explore opportunities to share or sell my work. TIG welding allows me to make more intricate designs, and I hope to continue improving my craft. Overall, I see myself enjoying welding and building on what I’ve learned at the College.”
