This unit is designed specifically for those who wish to understand the principles of safe handling and application of professional pesticide products. It is a legal requirement under the Plant Protection Products (Sustainable Use) Regulations (2012) to hold an approved qualification. The unit is for individuals whose job involves applying professional pesticide products. You will need to undertake the foundation module (PA1) plus a relevant application module (i.e. PA2, PA3, PA4, PA6). The PA1 on its own is not a recognised certificate of competence.
You will study the following topics: ? Legislative, regulatory, and Codes of Practice (CoP) requirements relating to the use of pesticides. ? The relevance of information on product labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS). ? How to minimise the risk of human contamination and implement emergency procedures. ? How to store and transport pesticides safely. ? How to manage and dispose of surplus pesticide and waste materials. ? Record keeping requirements for pesticide products. ? How to minimise the risk of environmental contamination and implement emergency procedures.
Practical, Industry-Relevant Learning
At Dearne Valley College, you will gain hands-on experience working on our 12-acre land to develop your knowledge and skills. You will be taught by experienced tutors with qualifications and relevant industry experience.
Good maths and literacy skills. Familiar with ICT usage, as there is an online exam. The minimum age for candidates is 16 years.

A candidate who has successfully achieved PA1 can progress onto one of the further Certificates of Competence (CoCs) within the pesticides suite (0216-74 to 0216-87)

You will be required to read chemical manufacturer guides and undertake an online exam. NPTC regulations do not allow candidates to have a reader for the exam.
