Emerging Drone Technology Enhances Learning in Computing and Digital
In collaboration with InproSurv, our students in Computing and Digital are taking to the skies with cutting-edge drone technology.
Using drones recently purchased by RNN Group, our year two T Level students are gaining hands-on experience, exploring the future of technology and its real-world applications across industries.
As part of their learning, students recently tested first-person view (FPV) drones, wearing headsets that allowed them to experience flight in real time. They also experimented with autonomous drones, which can follow a person without manual control.
Plans are underway to use drones to capture footage of our new College facilities, including flying them through College to create immersive tours. Students are also exploring photogrammetry and LiDAR, technologies that turn drone footage into detailed 3D models of buildings and landscapes.
These techniques are used in everything from virtual tours and game design to construction site inspections, helping professionals collect vital data while keeping people safe.
Speaking about the emerging technologies, Paul Smith, Curriculum Team Leader in Computing and Digital said:
“Photogrammetry is such a powerful tool. Students can fly drones around the campus, capture video footage, and use software to generate detailed 3D models.
The potential for this technology is incredible.”
Curriculum also covers the Internet of Things (IoT), teaching students how connected devices like drones can collect and process data for different uses. Some students are working on projects involving drones for delivery services and site monitoring, demonstrating how this technology could revolutionise industries.
During discussions, students linked these concepts to wider applications, such as Google Earth and VR technology, where similar methods have been used to map entire cities in 3D. Excitement around drone capabilities is growing, with students eager to gain official drone licenses, allowing them to fly drones around public locations.
With ongoing training and certification opportunities, North Notts College is embracing the future of drone technology, offering students a unique chance to develop cutting-edge digital skills.
Stay tuned for more updates as students continue to explore the exciting possibilities of drones!
