From Classroom to Dojo: Staff Member Selected for England Karate Squad
Outside of his role as a Learning Support Assistant, Joe Hicks will be representing England at the European Karate Championships in Romania next month.
During a surprise visit, Joe joined fellow martial arts enthusiast and Protective Services tutor Kevin Yip to train Sports students in attacking and defensive techniques.
Joe first began karate at the age of 13 and explored a range of martial arts, including judo, boxing, ninjutsu, and Muay Thai. At 23, he returned to karate and started again as a white belt. Over the last 14 years, he has worked his way through the grading system, earning his black belt and progressing through higher Dan grades.

Speaking about his journey, Joe explained:
“They say a white belt is the beginning of training, and a black belt is the beginning of understanding. Each Dan grade takes years of commitment and development, but it’s been a really rewarding journey.”
Earlier this year, Joe affiliated with the governing body English Karate Alliance (EKA), which led to his selection for the national squad. EKA is part of the World Karate Confederation, with European and World Championships held in alternate years.
In Romania, Joe will represent England across seven events, including individual kata, individual kumite and team kumite, competing in the 18-41 category. Proudly wearing his England kit and national flag, he is set to test himself against some of the best martial artists in Europe.
Alongside training and competing, Joe also teaches at seminars across the country, sharing his skills with others while continuing his own development.
Balancing his sporting career with his professional role, Joe also supports students in his position as a Learning Support Assistant. He often draws on the discipline and focus he has developed through karate to inspire those he works with.
Reflecting on his achievements, Joe said:
“Being part of the England squad is a huge honour, and I’m excited to test myself at the European Championships. It’s also fantastic to be able to share my passion for karate both in and outside of work.”
Everyone at the College is proud of Joe’s achievement and wishes him the best of luck as he represents England on the European stage between 3rd-5th October 2025.
