FLEX learner Bayley at Bokay Florists

FLEX – Bayley

26 March 2024

Since starting FLEX, Bayley has advanced from Horizons onto a Supported Internship working at BoKay Florist in Worksop. After only six weeks, he felt a significant increase in confidence and now feels more prepared for future employment. We caught up with him and asked some questions about how he has found his experience to date.

What were some of the initial challenges you faced when starting the internship?

“Initially, I struggled interacting with customers due to my shy nature. I felt shy and wasn’t sure how to approach them confidently, especially since some had specific requests for flower types, arrangements, and even colour schemes. I would often stumble over my words while explaining different flower options or trying to understand their needs.”

How has your job coach support you throughout the internship?

My job coach, Rachel, has been instrumental. She started by accompanying me to the workplace, helping me feel comfortable in the environment. As I gained confidence, she gradually reduced her presence, but still remained available for assistance if needed.”

Have you learned any new skills during the internship?

“While I initially needed some time to reflect, I’ve definitely noticed improvements in my communication skills. I feel more confident speaking up and expressing myself clearly. Additionally, I’ve become more efficient with time management, learning to prioritise tasks effectively like creating bouquets, processing orders, and ensuring the shop floor remains organised and visually appealing.”

“This programme has significantly improved my confidence. Before the internship, I lacked direction and felt unsure about my career path. However, the experience has helped me develop valuable skills and opened my eyes to new possibilities.”

In what ways has this programme boosted your confidence?

“This programme has significantly improved my confidence. Before the internship, I lacked direction and felt unsure about my career path. However, the experience has helped me develop valuable skills and opened my eyes to new possibilities, like working in care homes. I now feel more prepared to explore different career options that involve helping others, which aligns with my interests.”

Has the internship helped you identify potential career paths?

“Absolutely. Working at the flower shop exposed me to the world of customer service, which has made me realise how much I enjoy helping others. Finding the perfect flowers to brighten someone’s day brings me joy and feels rewarding. This internship experience aligns perfectly with my desire to make a positive impact in people’s lives.”

Do you feel prepared for a job after completing this internship?

“While I wouldn’t say I’m completely ready to jump straight into any job, the internship at BoKay Flower Shop has made a huge difference. The experience has significantly reduced my anxiety about starting a new job, especially one that involves customer interaction. I now feel more confident in my ability to handle customer inquiries, manage my time effectively, and contribute positively to a workplace setting.”
