Building Futures: Quantity Surveying Challenge
After winning the Tilbury Douglas Quantity Surveying Challenge earlier this month, Louis Smith was presented with a new set of bricklaying tools.
Staff were impressed by his accuracy, problem-solving, and sharp thinking, all of which underline his potential as he steps into the construction industry.
Established in 1884, Tilbury Douglas is a leading UK construction contractor, delivering projects across building, infrastructure, mechanical and electrical work, and fit-out. Operating nationwide, the company manages large-scale projects with a focus on quality and efficiency. With over a century of experience, Tilbury Douglas is one of the country’s most established construction firms.
Earlier this month, Claire Firbank, Social Value Coordinator at Tilbury Douglas, delivered a lively presentation about the company and the range of careers in construction. Level 1 and Level 2 Bricklaying learners discovered roles such as quantity surveying, project management, engineering, and site operations. Claire explained how different jobs work together on real projects, giving students a glimpse of the industry in action.

Working from a realistic project brief, learners gained insight into how quantity surveyors plan projects, make key decisions, and manage the financial and logistical aspects of construction. Applying supplied cost information, participants developed practical problem-solving skills and confidence in tackling real-world challenges.
Excitement filled the room as learners collaborated, discussed ideas, and built confidence with practical, hands-on work. Louis stood out by producing the most accurate and well-structured calculations. His performance earned him the top spot and a toolkit presented by tutor Steve Ellis, marking an important milestone in his journey toward a career in construction.
Bricklaying Tutor Steve Ellis said:
“Louis showed real skill and precision in the challenge. He is clearly set up for success in construction, and this toolkit is a well-earned reward for all his hard work.”
Claire Firbank added:
“Seeing students like Louis apply their knowledge in a practical way is fantastic. Activities like this give learners confidence and a real insight into the range of careers available in construction.”
Celebrating talent, building confidence, and creating connections with industry, the challenge gave students a memorable experience. Louis’s toolkit and his achievement perfectly capture the excitement and potential on display during the activity.
