Race to RIAT: Esports Students Compete in National Drone Racing Programme
Esports Students Compete in National Drone Racing Programme
Five Esports students from North Notts College recently took part in the Race to RIAT drone racing programme, competing against teams nationwide. Held over six weeks, the initiative combines FPV (first-person-view) simulation software with structured aviation training.
Commencing on 20th April 2026, the project drives a broader national education strategy focused on digital aviation skills. Sheffield United Community Foundation hosted the cohort, uniting major partners including the British Esports Federation, DXC Technology, and the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust.

Advanced VelociDrone software challenged the competitors to navigate virtual aircraft through rapidly rotating digital courses. Each map introduced changing layouts and environmental constraints, requiring learners to adapt quickly under pressure.
Pilots required flawless accuracy, split-second control, and immense tactical resilience under intense pressure. Demonstrating rapid skill progression, Kieran recorded the fastest lap for the college at 57 seconds, while Iris secured a personal best of 215 seconds.

National Finals
Schools and youth teams across the United Kingdom are currently battling head-to-head to secure regional dominance. Only the 16 fastest pilots nationwide will qualify for the live grand final, scheduled to take place later this year.
Organisers are currently finalising the leaderboard results from this latest cohort to determine which elite competitors advance to the live phase. Best of luck to both Kieran and Iris as these crucial selection decisions are made.
