T Level Health Students Get Hands-On with Real Medical Equipment

Students studying the T Level Health course at North Notts College had the opportunity to step into the world of healthcare during an exciting hands-on workshop with Medical Mavericks.

Medical Mavericks inspire the next generation of medics and scientists by bringing real medical and sports science equipment into schools, colleges and events across the UK. Their workshops give students the chance to experience healthcare techniques and equipment that they may otherwise only encounter once they enter the industry.

For our T Level Health students, it was a fantastic opportunity to put their learning into practice and discover more about the skills and technology used by healthcare professionals.

Getting Hands-On with Healthcare

Throughout the session, students took part in a range of practical activities designed to give them an insight into different areas of healthcare.

They were able to:

• See inside the body using an ultrasound machine, learning how ultrasound technology can be used to look beneath the skin and support medical diagnosis.
• Explore handheld ultrasound devices, allowing learners to listen to their own pulse and gain a better understanding of how ultrasound technology can be used in healthcare.
• Try keyhole surgery, using practice equipment similar to the kits used by surgeons.
• Take blood from a fake arm, using a real needle to experience what it is like to carry out this important clinical procedure.
• Measure their blood pressure, developing their understanding of one of the most common checks carried out by healthcare professionals.
• Experience different eye diseases using Pathology Goggles, helping them understand how certain conditions can affect a person’s vision.

The practical nature of the workshop allowed students to develop their confidence while gaining a better understanding of the responsibilities, techniques and technology involved in healthcare.

What is a T Level in Health?

T Levels are technical qualifications designed to give students a mixture of classroom learning and valuable industry experience, helping prepare them for skilled careers.

The T Level Health qualification provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to progress into a range of healthcare careers or continue their studies.

At North Notts College, students can explore two pathways within Health:

Supporting the Adult Nursing Team

This pathway is designed for students interested in working alongside adult nursing professionals. Students develop an understanding of the principles and practices involved in supporting patients and healthcare teams.

Supporting the Therapy Teams

This pathway focuses on supporting therapy professionals and developing the skills needed to work with patients as part of multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Both pathways provide students with opportunities to develop practical skills and gain valuable experience that can help them take their next step towards a career in healthcare.

Preparing for a Career in Healthcare

Experiences such as the Medical Mavericks workshop are an important part of helping students understand what working in healthcare is really like.
