SkillBuild 2026: Construction Apprentices Secure Success at Regional Qualifiers

16 June 2026

Continuing their strong run of results, Construction apprentices at North Notts College delivered standout performances at the SkillBuild Regional Qualifiers on 2nd June 2026. Two joinery competitors took first and second place, while a bricklaying apprentice also secured second place at the same event.

Held at Leeds College of Building, the heat attracted competitors from across the region, including Leicester, Sunderland and North Lincolnshire. Bringing together construction apprentices across multiple trades, the event saw each competitor undertake timed practical assessments judged on accuracy and finish quality.

Joinery Heats

Following a technical drawing phase, competitors started building a four-sided frame over six hours. Advanced woodworking techniques were key during the build, requiring a curved segmental arch, decorative stop chamfers and precise internal detailing. Traditional mortise and tenon joints also featured throughout the frame, crafted entirely by hand.

Level 3 apprentice Matthew Lee secured first place, with Level 2 apprentice Harrison Lindsay finishing closely behind in second. Both are working under the National Trust at Clumber Park and are undertaking the architectural bench joinery course.

Bricklaying Heats

Working to strict competition blueprints, the bricklayers spent six hours constructing a technical panel. Precision became the focus of the challenge, which demanded execution of recessed and projected brickwork alongside brick-on-edge detailing. Competitors had to maintain consistency across multiple jointing methods throughout the build.

Level 2 apprentice Alfie Connolle, who works for Ed Ogle in Retford, secured second place in a closely fought competition. Fellow Level 2 Apprentice Freddie also took part in the competition, narrowly missing out on a podium finish.

National Finals

With regional scores now being collated, final selection for the SkillBuild National Finals will be confirmed once all heats have concluded.

Following his win, Matthew Lee may be among those being selected to compete later this year.
