Unearthing Clues: CSI Scenario at Hannah Park

Back in May, woodland near Hannah Park was transformed for a mock CSI investigation, giving Protective Services students valuable practical experience.

Tasked with applying classroom knowledge outdoors, learners showed sharp attention to detail while securing the scene, collecting evidence, and following forensic protocols under pressure.

Arriving at a staged crime scene deep within the woodland, learners immediately took steps to secure the perimeter, following standard protocol.

Swift and professional action saw tape and signage put in place to control access. Establishing a designated entry point ensured the scene remained uncontaminated and evidence was protected from the outset.

Every person entering the scene recorded their details in an entry log, which is a crucial step for maintaining a chain of custody.

Dressed in full personal protective equipment (PPE), learners moved carefully through the area, conducting an initial sweep to identify risks, prioritise evidence, and plan next steps.

Sketches and diagrams captured the full layout of the scene, marking the location of each item of interest.

Accompanied by comprehensive notes and photographs, these records ensured no detail was lost before evidence was moved or collected.

Evidence recovery required both attention to detail and strict procedure.

Using numbered markers, students photographed footprints, ‘blood’ spatter, fingerprints and other forensic clues – carefully preserving scale and positioning.

Each item was sealed in labelled bags and meticulously documented, with learners maintaining a robust audit trail.

The practical nature of this activity reinforced the importance of accuracy, precision, and following protocol in real-life criminal investigations.

Working outdoors presented challenges like uneven ground and shifting light, but students remained focused and professional throughout.

Learners sharpened vital skills such as teamwork, attention to detail, and critical thinking, all essential for careers in crime scene investigation.
