Free Short Courses for Adults this Summer

During the student holidays, we will be hosting a summer school for adults with a wide range of short courses and taster sessions taking place throughout July and August.

If you live in the Nottinghamshire or Rotherham areas and are aged over 19, you don’t have to travel far to have a memorable summer.

Rediscover your love of learning, top up your skills, and escape the boredom with a skills-based course taking place right here on your doorstep.

Ranging from one-hour workshops to three-week-long courses, our short summer courses are taught at our College campuses: Rotherham College, North Notts College and Dearne Valley College.

These short courses are relaxed and friendly, with lots of hands-on learning.

You’ll be taught by our experienced and approachable staff in an informal setting within the Colleges.

And best of all, our short courses are completely free for all adults – regardless of your income or current employment status.

Courses

Award in Mental Health Awareness

Duration: 1 day

When: Monday 8th July 2024

Time: 9am – 3pm

Course details:
Develop the skills needed to understand and support people experiencing a range of mental health problems. Ideal for people working in or considering a career in health or social care.

Understanding Employment, Business and Enterprise

Duration: 3 days

When: Monday 8th July, Wednesday 10th July and Friday 12th July 2024.

Time: 9am – 3pm

Course details:
This introductory programme equips you with the essentials of both employment and entrepreneurship.  Learn about your rights and responsibilities as an employee, explore the  world of business, and gain the knowledge to identify and develop your entrepreneurial skills. 

This course is perfect for anyone looking to take their first steps towards a successful career path,  whether as an employee or a business owner.

Taster sessions

Computer Programming

Duration: Two hour taster session

When:
Monday 22nd July 2024

Time: 1pm – 2pm

Dive into Coding:
A Computer Programming Taster Session is designed for anyone curious about programming. This session will unravel the mystery of coding and give you a hands-on taste of how to create your own programs. We’ll start with the basics, then tackle fun puzzles to introduce you to problem-solving techniques.

The highlight is a chance to write some simple programs yourself and see them come to life on screen! There will be plenty of time for questions and to learn how to take your coding journey further.

Whether you’re simply curious, considering a tech career, or want to build cool things, this session is a great first step to unleashing your inner programmer!

Functional Fitness in Protective Services

Duration: Two hour taster session

When: Tuesday 9th July 2024

Time: 10am – 12noon

Intrigued by the physical demands of protective services?
A taster session on Functional Fitness in this field can be your entry point. This introductory workshop will delve into the specific exercises and training methods that prepare professionals for the rigors of their jobs. You’ll learn how functional fitness builds strength, endurance, and agility, all essential for navigating challenging situations.

The session will also provide an overview of the importance of proper form and injury prevention in these physically demanding roles. By the end, you’ll gain a clear understanding of how functional fitness empowers those who serve and protect.

Urban, Land, Map and Navigation

Duration: Two hour taster session

When: Friday 12th July 2024

Time: 10am – 12noon

Are you interested in learning more about navigating urban environments?
A taster session on urban land maps and navigation can provide you with the foundational skills you need to confidently explore cities. This introductory workshop will introduce you to urban land maps, highlighting how to decipher symbols and navigate using a map.

You’ll also gain practical skills in urban navigation, learning techniques to orient yourself and find your way around unfamiliar areas. By the end of the session, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge and tools to tackle any urban adventure with ease.

Conflict Management in the Protective Services

Duration: Two hour taster session

Thursday 11th July 2024

Time: 10am – 12noon

Ever wondered how security professionals keep tense situations under control?
A taster session on Conflict Management in the Protective Services will give you a glimpse into the essential skills needed to de-escalate conflict. This introductory workshop will explore the different types of conflict you might encounter on the job, and equip you with practical strategies to manage them effectively.

You’ll learn techniques for active listening, verbal de-escalation, and diffusing tense situations, all while ensuring the safety of yourself, those you protect, and the public.

Health Screening

Duration: Two hour taster session

Thursday 15th August 2024

Time: 10am – 12noon

This quick and informative session will offer a range of basic health checks, giving you a snapshot of your current well-being and how to monitor your health.

It’s a perfect opportunity to chat with the health and social care team, learn valuable tips for a healthy summer, and discover our comprehensive health screening programme.
