Hairdressing Students’ Work Wows in Winter Wonderland Competition

8 January 2021

Hairdressing and barbering students at North Notts College recently had the opportunity to showcase their creativity in an internal Winter Wonderland competition.

The competition, which saw both full and part-time students from Level 2 and Level 3 Hairdressing compete against their respective groups, was also an innovative way for the students to evidence their progress in one of the course units – as practical work has been affected by Government restrictions imposed on salons due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Level 2 Hairdressing student Amy Whiteley took part in the competition and created a look inspired by a popular Christmas character.

“We’ve been creating hair and make-up looks as part of a competition and for the ‘Create an Image’ unit of the course.

“I created a look inspired by The Grinch, I saw somebody do something similar on TikTok and used it to inspire me today. I enjoy doing creative things like this.

“I’m hoping to have my own salon eventually, I’d like to maybe do a beauty therapy course next so that I can offer a range of treatments.”

Level 2 Hairdressing student Taylor-Jade Irving created a look inspired by a Christmas tree.

“I like tinsel and glitzy things so started looking on the internet for different things. I’m really happy with the finished look. I used some different materials; I used a star to grip in the hair, some tinsel, spray paint and attached baubles and lights to a poncho to create a full look.”

North Notts College hairdressing lecturer Karen Bradley teaches each of the groups that participated in the competition and arranged for colleagues from the department to judge the work.

Karen said: “I’d like to say a big well done to everyone that participated in the Winter Wonderland competition, there was some excellent work on show.

“I’m really proud of the quality of looks that have been created throughout the competition. It was a nice way for the students to show their creative side, and I’m so proud of how adaptable our students have been over the last term in really challenging circumstances.”
