Media Make-up Student Clocks-Up Almost 1 Million Followers on TikTok

27 November 2020

A North Notts College Level 2 Media Make-up student, Lucas Rodgers (@lucasrodgerss) from Worksop, has grown a massive following on social media platforms TikTok and Instagram through sharing make-up tips, tutorials and jaw-dropping body art.

Lucas, who joined the course at Retford Post-16 Centre in September, has amassed over 860,000 followers on TikTok and close to 25,000 followers on Instagram since he started showcasing his creativity and love of make-up on social media a couple of years ago.

Lucas said: “When I started showing my make-up on TikTok and Instagram it wasn’t a common thing for boys to be in beauty and doing make-up. People like James Charles and Jeffree Star inspired me and showed me gender doesn’t matter; you can do what you love. Now, I’m fortunate that I get to inspire people through my art.”

For Lucas, studying Media Make-up is not just following his passion, but is also about building key knowledge and skills for his future career.

Lucas explains: “This course is helping me gain professional standards and become more confident in applying make-up to other people; a valuable skill for my future. On my social media channels, I’ve been creating looks on myself whilst sat at my desk in my bedroom.”

His social media following and influence has given Lucas the chance to work with several make-up brands, something that he says is helpful on a course that demands a full make-up kit.

Lucas adds: “It was so unexpected when I started to get brands contacting me. I’m working with Benefit Cosmetics on their Christmas campaign; it is so exciting to be creating content for them!

“I love the opportunities that social media has provided for me and I would love to take that further, and perhaps work on clients alongside any opportunities that I gain through my social media platforms.

“As long as I get to share how happy make-up makes me feel and help and inspire other people through my love of make-up, I’ll be happy!”

North Notts College Senior Curriculum Team Leader for Media Make-up Karen Connole teaches Lucas and advocates the importance of having a social media presence for all aspiring Make-up Artists.

Karen said: “The following that Lucas has on social media is amazing. He creates real statement looks and is incredibly talented. The success he has enjoyed so far is well deserved; he has a bright future in the make-up industry.

“I’m a big believer in using social media to showcase your skills and talent; it’s so important in our industry. I always tell our students that showcasing the quality of their work and marketing themselves are vital skills and a great way of getting noticed and gaining clients.”
